ND.ND.02006 We might end up as pets -- or food

One of the cleverest observations I have heard about a future of intelligent robots is that “.. if we are lucky, they will treat us as pets, and if we are very unlucky, they will treat us as food.” I thought that credit for this goes to brilliant author and future-gazer Bruce Sterling, but Bruce doesn't recall saying it, and now I am not so sure where it came from, or even whether (as one friend swears) that I might have originally said it myself. Most likely the quip came from misunderstanding someone else. If only the age of intelligent robots would arrive, then I might be able to ask an AI to help me look for it and save me from my imperfect memory...
